“Put aside the intellectual habit of chasing words and phrases and learn to take the backward step that shines the light inward.”
Eihei Dogan 1200-1253
Unlike many meditation practices, the purpose of zazen is not to achieve any particular state of mind. Letting go of conceptual distractions in the mind, we allow the breath to bring us back to the direct experience of the present moment. Each moment of zazen is fresh and unique, which helps us realise that life consists of constant change. Through this realisation each person will find their own organic process over time leading to a greater feeling and understanding of consciousness.
